Linseed oil is a yellowish oil extracted from flax seeds without the use of heat. When added to oil paint, it increases gloss and transparency, thins the paint for smoother flow, and reduces the appearance of brushmarks. It also slows the paint’s drying time. Linseed oil is equally well suited for mixing with dry, ground pigments.
Please note: Soft materials that have absorbed linseed oil must be stored in sealed containers. When exposed to air, the oil oxidises and can generate enough heat to cause spontaneous combustion. Brushes and tools used with linseed oil should be cleaned with white spirit.
