Copper Carbonate produces an apple green colour in glazes when fired under neutral and oxidising conditions, apart from in alkaline glazes when a turquoise blue is obtained. A copper red colour known as “sang-de-bueuf” can be produced sometimes in reducing conditions.

When added to low-solubility leaded glazes, copper causes the solubility of the lead to be greatly increased, and so makes the glazes unsuitable for use in objects used for containing food or drink.
