Barium carbonate serves as a high-temperature flux and can be incorporated in small amounts (0.2-0.8%) into slips and low-fire bodies to decrease salt solubility and prevent scumming. It is widely used in creating crystal matte glazes, as BaO easily forms crystalline structures during cooling. Additionally, barium carbonate promotes crystal growth in various glazes and can enhance the appearance of certain metallic finishes.
